As with most ISVs, the software they develop and sell as a product usually comes from solving a problem or addressing a need for a customer. The modules that make up our Operations Suite are no exception to this approach.
But rather than just rattling off the modules and telling you what you can read in the brochure, let’s talk about the challenges. We'll dive into how we can solve these challenges so you can learn how to conquer incoming shipments with Container Management.
All Shapes & Sizes
Dynamics GP includes modules to manage purchase orders from vendors, sales orders to customers, and inventory management to track the items bought and sold. Many people refer to this as the “Supply Chain”, as it manages the complete cycle of buying, storing and selling ‘durable goods’.
We have customers that buy and sell everything from room-sized machines that make laminated cardboard game boxes to customers whose products are so medically advanced they're just gaining FDA approval. We have customers who buy and sell items in a variety of units of measures and are buying and selling all over the world. And let’s face it – there are all kinds of challenges out there.
On the Procurement Side
We often talk to customers who buy from overseas and have their items delivered to them via shipping containers. Sometimes a “shipment” is actually multiple, physical containers of items.
And within those containers there could be items from:
one vendor
multiple vendors
one vendor with multiple purchase orders
Managing the dates from the time of the creation of the shipment to the time it arrives at the warehouse will add more complexity. Don't forget the fact that the customer owns the contents of the container as soon as it’s placed “on the water”. Even the requirement to calculate the landed costs of the shipment by apportioning the items by the amount of space they take on the container (dimensional weights), can be downright daunting.
How can Container Management help?
The Container Management module allows you to create individual containers with the items that make up the shipment. We also allow you to post those containers into an “In Transit” location. This will help you gain visibility to those items. It will show them as owned while they're in transit, along with the associated landed costs attributed to the shipment.
We give you the ability to enter in the dimensions and weights to apportion landed cost at the cube level. As well as allow the dates you're managing at the shipment level to roll down to the individual purchase order lines. Users that need to know when the items are expected to be received will see the latest dates, simply by updating the container.
Container Management is also available for Dynamics 365 BC. It can help conquer incoming container shipments and the challenges you face.
