Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations: What’s the Difference?

Email | Print

Microsoft is committed to offering a broad range of business management solutions to meet the needs of organizations of various sizes and industries. The Microsoft Dynamics cloud family includes two different ERP solutions: Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations, previously known as Dynamics NAV and Dynamics AX, respectively.

While both solutions are accounting systems at their core, it’s a good idea to evaluate both systems to see which product makes more sense for your business. Your implementation partner should be able to guide your choice, but in the meantime, here are the main things to know about Business Central and Finance and Operations.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

Designed for small and medium-sized businesses, Business Central is the most recent ERP solution added to the Dynamics 365 family. It provides a streamlined, intuitive interface from which SMBs can manage all aspects of their operations and finances. It can be customized and adapted easily by role, ensuring each user get their information they need easily.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations

Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations provides a full management system to meet more detailed business needs and is considered a Tier-1 ERP solution. This solution is ideal for organizations with complex business structures, extensive collections requirements and procedures, and detailed budgeting requirements or advanced auditing compliance needs, for example.

Which one should I choose for my organization?

As both solutions are cloud-based, they could be good options if your organization is looking to migrate to the cloud or if your current system no longer meets your current needs. A cloud-based ERP solution offers many benefits, from eliminating the need to manage your infrastructure to cost predictability thanks to monthly payments. Both also integrate to other Dynamics 365 modules such as Sales, Marketing, and Talent to expand the range of features and possibilities offered by your solution and ensure that all aspects of your organization are managed from a single platform.

One of the main differences between Business Central and Finance and Operations is the type of organizations they are designed for. Business Central is more suited to SMBs and tier-2 businesses looking for an end-to-end solution for the complete management of their operations, while Finance and Operations is geared towards larger businesses with more advanced and complex needs.

Another important differentiator is the implementation of the solution. As both offer different levels of features and possibilities, the time and costs involved will vary. We suggest making a list of your current and future needs so that a Microsoft reseller can better evaluate which system would better meet your current situation as well as your long-term growth.
