How Microsoft Intelligent Edge Enhances On-Premises ERP Solutions

Email | Print

Previously, customers with on-premises ERP solutions haven’t been able to easily connect their systems to the intelligent cloud. With the latest release of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, Intelligent Edge was introduced for several on-premises Dynamics products, including Dynamics 365 Business Central (On-Premises), Dynamics GP, Dynamics SL, and Dynamics NAV. Now, with Microsoft’ Intelligent Edge, you can seamlessly connect your on-premises solution to an instance of Microsoft’s intelligent cloud through Business Central. When the connection is made, your on-premises data is securely replicated to the intelligent cloud. You decide which data you want to replicate (all if you choose), and then, within the main pages of your on-premises solution, you’ll be able to receive actionable analysis and content. The intelligent cloud gives you access to solutions such as Power BI, PowerApps, Microsoft Flow, and AI to provide insight that enables you to run your business better that ever.

How Intelligent Edge benefits businesses

There are various reasons a company might choose to have their business systems hosted on-premises instead of in the cloud. If that is your choice, Intelligent Edge can bridge the gap between on-premises and the cloud so that you can retain your on-premises solutions but still take advantage of many of the beneficial features of the cloud. Your data will remain on your on-premises servers, but it will be securely backed up to the Azure cloud.

How Intelligent Edge works

If you have thought about moving to cloud enabled business processes, no doubt you’ve read about the advantages of cloud computing: mobility, scalability, security, lower costs, more features, more flexibility. But if you have decided to keep your servers on-premises, you need an experienced Microsoft partner, such as Western Computer, to help you get the benefit of the cloud without moving completely to the cloud.

To establish the Intelligent Edge connection, Western Computer will:

• Create a Dynamics 365 Business Central cloud tenant

• Install the intelligent edge base extension

• Create a data replication connection between your SQL databases using Azure Data Factory (ADF)

Nothing will change in your on-premise Dynamics ERP system, but you will be able to access your data through Dynamics 365 Business Central in the cloud. You will not be able to perform transactions in the cloud, but you can view, download, and print data and use it with your Azure cloud applications.

Advantages of Intelligent Edge

Intelligent Edge provides select Microsoft Dynamics on-premises users access to a number of benefits previously available only to those who had moved their businesses to the cloud. Some of these benefits are:

Total access to your data at any time and from any place – around the clock and around the world

Today’s businesses are on the move. Intelligent Edge allows management and employees to have mobile accessibility to your business information, no matter where they work. This feature has become indispensable in a mobile business environment, especially for field service or sales teams whose jobs keep them out of the office the majority of the time. The ability to view the data they need while on the road or at a client’s place of business can make a huge difference in accuracy, efficiency, and profitability. Benefits are multiplied if yours is an international organization.

Seamless connection to Azure Cloud applications

With Intelligent Edge, your organization will be able to connect to powerful Azure Cloud applications such as Power BI, Microsoft Flow, PowerApps, and Cortana machine learning. Previously unavailable to those with on-premises solutions, these cutting-edge tools can open up new opportunities, and empower your team to do things such as creating personalized applications, extending your insight, automating processes, boosting productivity, and other previously unimagined benefits.

Faster, easier transition to the cloud

For companies whose goal is to transition eventually to a full cloud environment, Intelligent Edge is a wise step along the way. Intelligent Edge will introduce you to the benefits and the power of the cloud and will help you get ready for the transition when and if it becomes your choice. The transition from Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central on-premises to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central in the cloud will be fast and smooth with far less expense than starting from scratch.

Bonus data replication

Your level of security and business continuity will be greater with Intelligent Edge because your on-premises data will be replicated in the Azure cloud. Even if a fire, flood, or tornado destroys your servers, your data will be safe and instantly available in the cloud and protected by Microsoft’s unmatched commitment to privacy and security. Replicate or retain as much of your data as you choose.

Considerations before implementing Microsoft’s Intelligent Edge

Intelligent Edge has many benefits. But there are also a few things you need to know before you decide to use the solution to connect your on-premises ERP to the benefits of the cloud.

Intelligent Edge connector provides only a one-way sync from your on-premise servers to your cloud instance of Dynamics 365 Business Central. That means you can see your data, but you will not be able to perform online transactions.

Intelligent Edge can replicate the data from your on-premise server to your cloud instance daily, weekly, monthly—whatever is best for your schedule. We recommend replicating outside of business hours so as not to affect performance, but you should be aware that you will not be seeing real-time data online.

Only core on-premise data and extension data will replicate. On-premise data in tables built with in-line (non-extension) development will not replicate to Intelligent Edge. However, if you are running Business Central on-premises or NAV 2018 and your modifications are developed in extensions, that data will sync up to Intelligent Edge.
