written by Nicholas Sim

Are you looking for an easy way to report data out of Dynamics GP while avoiding the hassle of setting up tedious integrations or connections? While there are several options available to handle this task, no software is as beneficial or as stunning as Power BI. Alternatives like Qlik and Tableau, while useful, can’t keep up with the capabilities, benefits, or aesthetics of Power BI. Below we’ll discuss just a few of the benefits of Power BI.

1. Connecting your GP data to Power BI dashboards takes no more than a few clicks

There is more than one way to connect to your data source and each method has its own merits.  Based on your particular business needs, we can narrow down the options and select the best method for you. Below is a list of the main available methods.

  1. Connection to Dynamics GP through the Power BI Content Pack
  2. OData connection to Dynamics GP
  3. Direct Connection to the SQL database hosting the data
  4. Connection to Azure SQL Database, which is connected to the SQL database

2. Easy-to-use and Highly Customizable

Power BI is not only capable of generating simple dashboards quickly and easily, but it can also be used to create high-level dashboards with financial metrics, row level security, and much more. These reports are not only easy to create but are also extremely customizable to fit essentially any business need. More information about Power BI reporting features can be found in our blog “Welcome to Power BI” or by contacting Nicholas Sim at

3. Dashboards can be Displayed on Dynamics GP Home Page

The new Dynamics GP 2018 has also made it easier to integrate Power BI dashboards onto your homepage in Dynamics. This means that only Dynamics GP needs to be open to view your Power BI dashboards! Once you are logged into Dynamics GP, just follow the steps below and within 10 minutes all of your dashboards can be viewed on your GP homepage.

Step 1: Go to Microsoft Dynamics GP --> Tools --> Setup --> System --> Reporting Tools Setup --> Power BI

You will notice that it requests a Client ID. This can be obtained by following these steps:

  • Choose APIs to access

  • Click on “Register App” and the client ID will appear in the text box below

Step 2: Go back to Dynamics GP, enter the Client ID, and click “OK”

Step 3: Go to the Home Page, click “Customize this page…”, check the “Power BI” box and select the à icon

Step 4: Select the desired dashboards, click “Insert >>”, and then “OK”

All the selected dashboards will now be presented on the homepage for you to adjust. However, there are two possible problems that you may encounter, a login failed error and a script error on the home page. To address and resolve either of these issues follow these instructions:

Login Failed Error Solution

This can be solved by accessing the Dynamics GP system database and deleting the authentication information for the login ID that is having the issue in the syADALTokenCache table.

Script Error on Dynamics GP Homepage Solution

This can be solved by accessing “Open Registry Editor” on your local computer and changing the data value for “Dynamics.exe” to 11000 (Decimal).
