There have been a lot of inconsistent statements made over the past two years about this product, and a lot of questions about how ready for prime time the product will be. I want to answer those questions here for people thinking about this new product for their business.
If you're looking for more information on the
Q: Is this a full-featured ERP, or just a limited set of features?
A: This is the real thing folks. This is the entire Microsoft Dynamics NAV ERP system, available fully in the cloud with every standard Microsoft feature available and ready to go. For Manufacturing companies; full production order, bill of material, routing, MRP, MPS, CRP, production forecasting and every other standard NAV manufacturing feature will be there out of the box.
Q: Does this mean Dynamics NAV won’t be available anymore?
A: Whether it’s called “NAV” or not, the product that has existed for over 25 years remains. Customers will have the option of continuing to use (and buy if they want) an “on-premise” license or switch to a cloud license. Cloud hosting will be facilitated by a partner, either hosted on a partner’s equipment or hosted by Microsoft themselves.
Q: I’ve heard it will only be a subscription now. Is that true?
A: Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central will be either a subscription or outright purchase model, but to be cloud hosted by Microsoft it will need to be a subscription.
Q: I heard none of my old Dynamics NAV custom codes will work on Dynamics 365 Business Central?
A: Microsoft Dynamics 365 in the cloud will use a new set of tools for creating customizations. The new tools are far more “upgradable” – but customers who purchase the “on-premise” version or host their system on a partner data center can still use the old Dynamics NAV C/AL custom code without any significant difference.
