Business or Enterprise Edition, Which Dynamics 365 Licensing Option Should I Choose?

Email | Print

Are you interested in using Dynamics 365 to manage your finance and operations, but confused by the licensing?  You are not alone. Depending on your needs, you can buy Dynamics 365 apps to handle sales to HR and everything in between. Thus, creating an end to end system that fits your business like a glove.

However, if you plan to use Dynamics 365 to manage your finance and operations, there are two editions of that app, you must select from. So, one of the Dynamics 365 licensing questions we hear most often is, which of these is right for me?  While there are a variety of factors that go into this decision, the table below lays out the key ones.

Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations Business Vs. Enterprise

Dynamics 365 Business Edition Dynamics 365 Enterprise Edition
  • Targets small and medium businesses (less than 250 users)
  • Lower price point
  • Simpler, with a smaller, more focused feature set
  • Has tools to help you manage your finances, sales, marketing and service
  • Targets large businesses (more than 250 users).
  • Higher price point
  • Comprehensive feature set
  • Has tools to help you manage your finances, sales, marketing and service PLUS project automation, and field services.

Please note, if you need field services or project automation, or think you will down the road, go with the enterprise edition.  At this time, there is no simple way to transition between these two Dynamics 365 licensing options.

Also, the company size numbers given in the above table are just a guide.  A larger company that simply needs CRM and basic financials, may be fine with the business edition.  While a small retail shop that needs manage omni-channel customer relationships will want the enterprise edition.
