WHAT IS POWER BI?

Do you ever ask yourself this?  "Is your business driving you or are you driving your business?"  Power BI might give you what you need!  Power BI  is a suite of business analytics tools that permit a designer to deliver insights into key performance indicators. There are hundreds of different data sources that Power BI can connect to.   The tool presents graphical representation of data and provides a report as back-up. These dashboards and reports can be published from your organization to be viewed on the web and across mobile devices.

WHAT DOES POWER BI LOOK LIKE?

The below screenshot is a bar chart representation of sales by state, a map view with color variances illustrating sales numbers by volume, and a dashboard presentation of cash balances that indicate company cash/revenue flow.

WHO CAN USE POWER BI?

Power BI can link to SQL, Excel, Google Analytics, web pages, CRM, Oracle, MailChimp, MySQL, Sales force just to name a few. For example, a designer could connect with Odata about upcoming events being held in your city and cross-reference key performance indicators for restaurants or hospitals.   Crafted with meaningful data, an enterprise could use this data to manage staffing, hours of operations or specials. Hospitals could look at the historical data and determine how many doctors they should staff, or where emergency squads would be most efficient.

Anyone can create dashboards with a 360-degree view and scale to your enterprise with security built in.

HOW MUCH DOES POWER BI COST?

You can have a mix of the free and pay versions. Power BI Pro is around $9.99 per month. Power BI desktop is free.

WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS FOR POWER BI?

  • Desktop
  • BI Service - cloud based
  • BI Mobile - emulates what is in the service
  • BI Embedded - Dynamics GP 2016 has Power BI and Odata embedded within the application
  • BI Developer

POWER BI HELPFUL TIPS:

Before designing your dashboards ask yourself the following questions:

  2. What is your goal and do you expect the data to be helpful?
  3. What action can be taken based on the metrics?
  4. How do you measure your metrics and business?
