The service was unveiled by Microsoft as Power BI for Office 365, and it was actually based on the Power Query, Power Pivot, and Power View, all of which are Microsoft Excel add-ins. As time went on, the company kept adding more and more functionality until they finally released Power Bi to the general public.
The main target of the analytics service is small to mid-size business owners. Microsoft offers the service as a Web-based Software as a Service (SaaS) product; and there is even a professional version, Power BI Plus, available for less than $10.00 per license per month. In addition to the web-based client, customers can download native mobile apps for Windows, Android and iOS devices.
Some of the advantages of Power BI as part of hosted Dynamics GP include hybrid deployment support, quick insights, Cortana integration, deep customization, and APIs for integration with other products. Just as with Dynamics GP, Microsoft envisions Power BI as a tool that can be easily combined with Microsoft products as well as from other competing vendors’ products – such as Salesforce.
The recently added support for Cortana, an intelligent personal assistant created by Microsoft, makes it possible to quickly query data using natural speech, making access to business information easier than ever. Best of all, if there’s anything at all that you don’t like about the default Power BI configuration, you can change it to fit your own needs.
Power BI Reports on Home Pages
The web interface has been improved to allow users to add Power BI Reports to Home Pages. All users have to do is check the Power BI box and click the blue arrow, which will open the Power BI Details window. There, the software displays all available reports which can be added to Home Pages.
Once on the Home Page, users can customize the size of the report window, click on the report to launch the report in the browser, and, of course, scroll through it to see the displayed information. The only thing that’s currently not possible is a direct modification of the reports within the Power BI window on the GP Home Page.
