Many businesses offer full-time employees paid sick leave as part of a comprehensive employee benefit package. Part-time employees, which are commonly found in industries with high turnover rates, are not usually offered paid sick leave, among other common benefits. The most recent state to offer a mandatory paid sick leave policy to part-time employees is California and their policy goes into effect on July 1, 2015. Other areas that have implemented mandatory paid sick leave include Portland, Oregon where it became effective on July 1, 2014 and Seattle, Washington with an effective date of September 1, 2012. Most of these new polices use an accrual program that provides an hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked. This policy applies to each employee working within that region, without regard to the where the employee lives or where their employer is based. In other words, this mandate is not just for the businesses physically located within those city or state boundaries.
