Changes are Coming; Remain Compliant with Mandatory Sick Leave Legislation

Email | Print

Many businesses offer full-time employees paid sick leave as part of a comprehensive employee benefit package. Part-time employees, which are commonly found in industries with high turnover rates, are not usually offered paid sick leave, among other common benefits. Changes may be coming if they haven’t already. Local and state agencies are talking about implementing mandated paid sick leave policies to all of your employees, regardless of part-time or full-time status – there is even talk of a federal mandate...

The most recent state to offer a mandatory paid sick leave policy to part-time employees is California and their policy goes into effect on July 1, 2015. Other areas that have implemented mandatory paid sick leave include Portland, Oregon where it became effective on July 1, 2014 and Seattle, Washington with an effective date of September 1, 2012. Most of these new polices use an accrual program that provides an hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked. This policy applies to each employee working within that region, without regard to the where the employee lives or where their employer is based. In other words, this mandate is not just for the businesses physically located within those city or state boundaries.

Businesses should not wait long to implement the proper technology needed to manage this new mandate. Though it may not impact your business today, with acquisitions, expansions, or changes in regional legislation, it could eventually become a part of your comprehensive benefit program. Users of Microsoft Dynamics® GP, a robust enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution, can watch “Easily Stay Compliant with Mandatory Sick Leave Legislation in Dynamics GP,” a short webinar to learn about the key provisions of these new sick leave mandates and how you can use Microsoft Dynamics GP to remain in compliance.
