My boss always tells me: Don’t come to me with problems. Come to me with solutions. So here’s the conversation I would like to have with you.
ME: I think you may have a Problem: You’re stuck with a dinosaur software system. I can offer you a Solution: Move into the 21st century with Microsoft Dynamics GP to manage all your business needs.
YOU: Whoa. Wait just one second. Why would you call my business management system a dinosaur? It was cutting edge when I bought it 15 years ago.

YOU: That’s nonsense.
ME: Really? How often do you buy a new cell phone?
YOU: Every couple of years, but that’s different.
ME: Why is it different?
YOU: Because a cell phone might only cost me, say, $200. And new business management software is going to cost a lot more than that!
ME: True. But now tell me why you buy a new cell phone every couple of years.
YOU: That’s obvious. The technology improves. I can access everything I need on my newest cell phone. I can access the Web, my home email, my work email, all of my contacts, my calendars. I can set up reminders and alerts. My new cell phone even replaced my camera and my GPS.
ME: You just made my case. You buy new cell phones because they offer greater functionality and that’s because the technology has improved. The same is true, in spades, for your company’s software system. I’m willing to bet that your company has changed in the last 15 years.
YOU: We manufacture widgets and we’ve always manufactured widgets.
ME: Okay. Do you have the same number of employees that you had 15 years ago? Have you automated any of your manufacturing processes? Are you outsourcing? Has your supply chain changed? Has your revenue increased?
YOU: I see your point. I just don’t need to change something that’s not broken.
ME: “Not broken” is not the same as “state of the art.” I’ll bet your old cell phone wasn’t broken but your new cell phone is state of the art.
