Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 System Requirements

Email | Print

Microsoft's Dynamics NAV package is an ERP solution that streamlines and automates redundant business processes, and can be easily adapted and customized for management of sales, manufacturing, finance, projects, shipping, services, HR, and a wide variety of business functions, even for very specialized industries.

As software improves, technology has to change to keep up with it. It's important to make sure your hardware is up to date before attempting to switch over. Here are the system requirements for the various parts of the NAV 2013 package. These are minimum software requirements, so later versions are supported, unless stated otherwise.

Windows Client

Operating System: Dynamics NAV 2013 will run on Windows Server 2008 (32 or 64 bit), 2008 R2, and Windows 7 or 8 (Professional or Enterprise editions, 32 and 64 bit versions). Windows 7 Ultimate is also compatible. In order for it to run on 64 bit versions, however, it must run under WOW64 emulation.

Memory: You will need 30 MB of hard drive space and 1 GB of RAM.

Software: For instant messaging and the Telephony API, you will need Microsoft Lync 2010 or Microsoft Office Communicator 2007.

Office 2010 is necessary for “mail merge,” and Office 2010 or 2007 SP1 is needed for Outlook integration, budget import and export, and SharePoint links. The Excel add-in will not work unless Excel 2010 is installed on the computer.

You will also need Office 2010 to use OneNote. (Note: OneNote isn't supported for 64-bit Office 2010 if it is running of Windows Server 2008).

Reports: You can design custom reports with the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Development Environment. You will need Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Professional, Premium, or Ultimate in order to do this. There are other software requirements, but they come with NAV 2013 and will install if you don't have them.

Web Client

Server Components: You will need Report Viewer 2010. If you have Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 (including R2), you will need Internet Information Server 7.0. If you have Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012, you need Internet Information Server 8.0. In either case, you'll need the following components to be allowed:

-        .Net Extensibility

-        ASP .Net

-        ISAPI Extensions and Filters

-        Windows Authentication

-        Request Filtering

-        HTTP Activation

-        Static Content

Thankfully, if Internet Information Server isn't installed, it will be installed during setup, with the proper settings enabled.

Browsers: Some browser-operating system combinations only offer limited support:

-        Full Support – Internet Explorer 9 and 8 on Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 (including R2 and both the 32 and 64 bit versions).

-        Limited Support – Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8 or Server 2012; Chrome 16 or Firefox 9 on Windows 7 or Server 2008; and Safari 5.1.2 for the iPad have partial support.

Microsoft Dynamics NAV Server

Operating Systems: NAV server only works on 64 bit versions of Windows. The supported systems include Windows 8 Professional or Enterprise; Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, or Enterprise; Windows Server 2012; Windows Server 2008 (including R2), Windows Small Business Server 2008, and Windows Small Business Server 2011.

Keep in mind, the Administration tool does not work for the standard Windows Server 2008, but it does work for the R2 version.

Memory: Just as with Windows Client, you need 500 MB of hard drive space and 2 GB of RAM.

Software Requirements: Required software that comes will the package isn't mentioned below.

-        The Microsoft Dynamics NAV Portal Framework for Microsoft SharePoint 2010 will not work without Active Directory.

-        Microsoft Dynamics NAV Administration requires Windows Powershell 2.0, which comes standard with Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7.

Database Components for SQL Server

If you don't have a compatible version of Microsoft SQL Server, setup will install SQL Server 2012 Express. You will need an operating system that is compatible in order to continue.

Portal Framework for Microsoft SharePoint 2010

Operating Systems: Windows Server 2012, 2008 R2, or 2008 64-bit.

Software Requirements: Install SharePoint Foundation 2010, SharePoint Server 2010, or SharePoint Server 2010 SP1. You will also need either SQL Server 2008 R2 or 2008. Only the 64 bit versions are supported.

Browser Support: Support is the same as for the Web Client, except there is no support for Safari.

Automated Data Capture System

Make sure that you have installed MSXML version 6.0, Telnet or HyperTerminal, Microsoft Loopback Adapter, and the VT100 plug-in.

Microsoft Office Outlook Add-Inn

You will need a 32 bit version of Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010.
