SAP, Oracle, and Microsoft Dynamics Go Head to Head in ERP Software Implementation Benchmark

Email | Print

Because there are so many enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions to choose from, there are just as many studies to determine which one is right for your business.  Panorama Consulting Solutions compares the big three in “ERP implementation benchmark: Comparing SAP, Oracle, and Microsoft”, and highlights some interesting facts about each of these big name providers.

This study discusses the results of a survey conducted with over 2000 respondents from 61 countries who have selected or implemented either SAP, Oracle, or Microsoft Dynamics® ERP solutions between February 2006 and May 2012.  While there are deficiencies in the study, there is some helpful information to consider when choosing an ERP solution.

It may not come as too much of a surprise that SAP takes the lead in market share and making the short-list with companies looking for an ERP software solution.  Oracle also beats out Microsoft Dynamics on the short list by having a slightly larger market share.  However, where SAP and Oracle lose traction, Microsoft Dynamics picks up the lead by having shorter implementation periods and the highest percent of users realizing between 81-100% of the benefits.  Oracle has the longest implementation duration and SAP has the longest payback period.

The study suggests that the reasons behind the discrepancies are likely related to the complexity of the businesses making these choices.  Larger companies with multiple locations or operations are likely to have longer implementation phases due to the complexity and the number of people that may be involved in the early phases.  The study also shows that Microsoft Dynamics tends to attract smaller projects which explain the faster implementation schedule and higher success rates.  Panorama Consulting Solutions does point out that there are insufficiencies in this study and there is much that a business should discuss with potential software vendors before choosing an ERP software solution.

It is critically important to the success of an ERP implementation that a business choose the software solution that best meets their business needs.  Having a well thought out plan on what your business needs to capture in an ERP solution will also make the implementation phase shorter.  Working with an experienced software vendor will help determine which software solution will work best for a businesses’ operations, budget, and timeframe.  Contact Socius for more information about this study or the ERP software solutions available for your business.
