With plans to hire more than 200 employees by the end of 2012, SagePath Medical LLC, an early-stage firm from metro Chicago, knew time was of the essence and required accounting software to support its dynamic and high-growth business model. The company needed to move quickly to a strong financial and reporting system. Even more essential was that its new business management software had to allow for maximum flexibility for specialized customer contract management, as well as the company’s future inventory and warehouse needs.

SagePath was founded in the fall of 2011 by three partners, all seasoned executives in the pharmaceutical industry, and is forecasting dramatic growth in the near-term. This innovative company provides a unique set of integrated process, platform, and execution services to support the changing pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry. A new financial management and ERP solution was needed to accommodate its aggressive growth and profitability goals, and was critical to its success.

Familiar with user-friendly Microsoft solutions, SagePath decided that a Microsoft Dynamics ERP solution was the right choice for its expanding enterprise. Sikich was introduced to SagePath to help its team with their evaluation process comparing the Microsoft Dynamics ERP solutions. As a partner with deep experience in all four of Microsoft’s ERP solutions, it became clear that Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 was the right choice for four key reasons, listed below.

Why Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013?

1) Microsoft Dynamics NAV2013  is highly configurable. Its open architecture allows companies with unique business processes to easily customize the software to fit their specific requirements and methodologies. SagePath has unique processes related to its sales and operations teams, customer service commitment, and future inventory warehouse needs for managing and tracking promotional items.

2) Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 has a flexible chart of account structure. SagePath can manage and track its detailed customer contracts in the NAV chart of accounts by slicing and dicing the key information for internal and external reports. Dimensionality is especially important to SagePath employees since they will manage contracts with multiple clients, each with some unique reporting needs.

3) Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 integrates easily to other software systems. SagePath needs integration into its expense management solution (Concur), industry-specific CRM solution (iRep from Veeva Systems) and payroll provider system (ADP).

4) Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 readily handles international requirements. SagePath’s future growth plans include potential expansion into international markets, and NAV is designed to meet local regulatory and international market requirements with more than 40 localized versions that include multi-currency and multi-language capabilities.

SagePath had one more important requirement:  it was critical that they go live on their new financial software as quickly as possible to be ready to grow and scale. Again, Sikich’s veteran consulting team, which has been through thousands of ERP implementations from simple to complex, recommended Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 for a rapid deployment approach. And as one of 14 members of the Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 Technology Adoption Program, Sikich knew that SagePath would greatly benefit from the newest version of NAV, and recommended the company join the beta program. It was also recommended that the company run its new solution in the Sikich hosted environment to greatly reduce its up-front capital investment and alleviate the workload of its IT staff.

“I’ve been working with NAV from the very early days and Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 is by far Microsoft’s most significant release in the past 10 years, especially for enhanced features and functionality,” said George Ball, partner of Microsoft Dynamics NAV for Sikich and the project’s executive sponsor. “From a technology standpoint, NAV 2013 is a prominent solution for Microsoft. It will be the first Microsoft Dynamics ERP product offered on the Microsoft Azure cloud platform, and the first web client with fully-featured NAV capabilities. It also has a slick new SharePoint integration for users to access NAV 2013 through their SharePoint portals.  

“We are really impressed and love the benefits it will bring our clients,” Ball continued. “This is why I recommended that SagePath embrace the opportunity to utilize the pre-release of NAV 2013, which is expected to be generally available this fall.”

SagePath leaders chose several people from their company to be involved in evaluating and selecting a new ERP solution, including staff from program management, IT, and executive management.

“During the selection process we were not only looking for the right software solution, but for the right partner as well,” said Kevin Conway, VP of program management for SagePath. “We did not want a one-dimensional solution; we needed a solution and a partner who could scale with our growth at a fast pace.”

Conway said that the demo sold SagePath on Microsoft Dynamics 2013 for three reasons. “We could immediately see that Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 was intuitive and easy to use, the look and feel was familiar to our folks, and the timing for our implementation could go very quickly—by joining the beta program we could go straight to the latest version. Thanks to Sikich’s help—they did the heavy lifting—we got it up and running quickly.”

In less than 12 weeks, the Sikich team approached a milestone—they took the solution live just last week. SagePath Medical is now the first to go live in North America on Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 and the first in the world to go live on Microsoft Dynamics 2013 in a hosted environment.
