Quick Query and SmartLists Bring Incredible Value to Microsoft Dynamics ERP Solutions

The Dynamics GP SmartList tool and Dynamics SL Quick Query tool are hot topics here in our office these days.  Both of these tools offer up wonderful ways to query your system data on demand, on the fly, and how you want it.  The argument these days is which tool is better!  Not surprisingly we are about 50/50 here as to what our consultants like.

As both a Microsoft Dynamics SL and Microsoft Dynamics GP  partner we have wanted this tool for years on the Dynamics SL product.  With the release of Dynamics SL 2011 we are happy to finally have it.  It is a great start and while GP’s SmartList tool is a mature robust offering, Quick Query has made a big splash within the user community.

First a little background if you are new to these features.  Quick Query gives the end user over 100 out-of-the-box views.  The queries are organized by Series/Modules and allow you to filter, modify, and save the data to your needs.  The queries can be exported to Excel with the push of the button should you need to analyze the data at a deeper level.  SmartList for Dynamics GP is an identical tool, but comes with over 200 out-of-the-box views.

The Dynamics SL's Quick Query component is part of the System Manager (just like SmartLists) and does not require the purchase of another module-such as Dynamics GP's SmartList Builder to query data outside of the Dynamics ERP software. Any SQL view can be tapped to fetch data into the Quick Query.  This is a huge plus.

Both Quick Queries and SmartLists give the user the ability to drill back into the original source data screens from the out of the box queries.  Because SmartLists have been around longer, there are more useful and packaged SmartList queries already built into the software than you get with the Dynamics SL Quick Queries.   One of the things our consultants point out with SmartLists is that it is difficult to cut and paste Dynamics GP data from the grid like Dynamics SL because grids are not used in Dynamics GP for data entry.  To counter that, SmartList has a dump to Excel option that works great.
