href="http://www.gallup.com/consulting/142724/State-American-Workplace-2008-2010.aspx"> State of the American Workplace: 2008-2010. In it they discuss how American employees have fared during one of the most challenging periods in the country’s economic history. At the end of the report they conclude that our workforce “remains strong.” You would be tempted to say “Great!,” close the page, and carry on. I’d like to challenge you to read on.

How did they arrive at this conclusion? Very centric to their methodology are indicators that measure how engaged employees are in their work, and how those levels correlate to other key measurements throughout an organization. At best, only around 30% of workers are actually engaged in their work. Everyone else – the other 70+ percent— are either “not engaged” or “actively disengaged.” Those are astounding numbers. At the top of the org chart it may be difficult to see down into the layers of employees, through the managers, and get a good feel for this. However, there are more concrete measurements that can be indicative of the health of your company, and ultimately position you to influence how engaged your employees are.

While these are far from the only indicators or gut feelings to be considered, Gallup identifies key “performance outcomes” on page 5 of their report. Among these are: Absenteeism, Turnover, Shrinkage, Safety Incidents, Product Quality (Defects), Productivity, and Profitability. Are you tracking these measurements on a regular basis? Do you get outside of the financial statements and look at other business metrics?

You will see the term “BI” a lot these days, and with good reason. BI, or Business Intelligence, is how you turn your raw data into useful information that can be acted upon. Conclusions need to be drawn. Changes need to be made – but which ones? Get better at tracking your key performance outcomes and you can have better corollary information, or even ‘feel good data’ about the health of your workforce. If you read the Gallup report, you’ll see just how much positive correlation exists between these numbers.

Getting good BI doesn’t have to start at a complex level – but it does take tracking, which is why we recommend Microsoft Dynamics GP. Aside from being a great overall accounting, HR, or manufacturing package, there are many other features that will help you take the raw data from each department or profit center and turn it into useful information you can act on. Then you too can peer into the depths of your company, and start influencing the culture and see the benefits in the final outcomes.

JourneyTEAM – successful Microsoft Dynamics GP implementation.

1) Decide up front what your project objectives are. This will help you to remain focused, and keep the project running smoothly and on time. Knowing where you want the solution to take you allows you to keep your focus on the important pieces of your implementation. If there other objectives come up, you can always add a Phase II to your project.

2) The next key point is to document your requirements for the Microsoft Dynamics GP implementation. Often, you discover that you perform many requirements out of habit, making it easy to overlook something vital. Documenting your process for every project will alleviate the frustration of discovering you missed a step halfway thru an implementation. Again, remember to stay focused on the goals for the project. This is not the time to add expensive custom pieces because they look good in the moment. Design the process, and then see what can be adjusted to match the program process.

3) I believe a strong internal project management organization is one of the most important parts of a successful implementation. Even the best solutions can fail if you do not have the right internal team members on the project. A strong management team must have the ability to both manage effectively and centralize project focus. Stake holders often increase the scope of a project without increasing the budget or timeline. This can make or break an implementation. It is vital to include team project members that can both manage the scope and make clear decisions on what must be done in the first phase as opposed to what can be handled in a later phase.

4) Testing is imperative to a successful Dynamics GP implementation. I suggest three stages of testing for your new ERP solution. Begin testing early in the installation, and continue to test often. An analogy I have often heard is that testing is like brushing your teeth. To keep a clean implementation you must test (brush) often. I find the best practice is to put your best users in a lab mode, and set the expectation for them to find gaps. Making your users key owners of the system instead of passive bystanders will lead to them taking ownership of the product in a faster and more productive manner.

5) Last, but certainly not least, is the importance of training. I find that a one-time training is not enough. In most situations, you will need to train, train, and then retrain. Start training at the beginning of the project with the expectation that you will be retraining them at the end. Come back in six months to a year and train the users again. More experience in using the program will generate more detailed questions, as well as allow users to better apply the training provided.

Often, we are so focused on the big picture of a project that we forget to focus on these small details that will pave the way to a successful implementation.

JourneyTEAM – ERP software is only part of the equation to having a successful implementation. Once you have selected Microsoft Dynamics GP as the best ERP solution for your company, selecting the right Dynamics implementation partner is critical. The right partner has a huge impact on the success of a Dynamics Implementation. One important factor to consider when selecting a Microsoft Dynamics GP Partner is whether or not that partner uses a standard implementation methodology.

Following a standard implementation methodology for ERP implementations has a significant effect on the success of that project. Microsoft feels so strongly about this that partners will soon be required to pass exams showing proficiency in using a standard implementation methodology to achieve the Microsoft ERP competency.

As you meet with Dynamics partners and make a selection as to who will be the best fit for your organization, make sure each one clearly explains their implementation methodology to you. Many partners are using Sure Step, which is Microsoft’s recommended implementation methodology. While I also recommend Sure Step, the important factor is choosing a partner with a standard they follow, who can demonstrate a successful track record.

JourneyTEAM – <a

This means that current Dynamics GP customers who are using the older V8.0 of Dynamics GP will no longer be able to rely on Microsoft for support of their ERP system. Microsoft had originally planned to expire support for V8.0 on October 9, 2007, but because of the overwhelming requests from customers and partners they decided to extend the expiration date to October 13, 2009.

If you are currently using Dynamics GP V8.0, don’t worry: you will still be able to work with one of Microsoft’s Certified Partners for support. However, now may be a good time to think about upgrading to the current version. Dynamics GP V8.0 was released back in 2004 and has since been replaced with the current version, Dynamics GP V10. As you can imagine, there have been several upgrades made to the features and functionality in the newer version. To find out about the changes made in V10, you can review the Enhancements Brochure which outlines all the cool new features. And for more helpful information about V10, you can visit <a

Wouldn’t you feel better knowing that you are using a system from one of the most trusted names in software? A company who listens to their customers? And, has <a

The thought of migrating data, re-training employees, implementing the system, and possible downtime is more than any manager wants to endure. Especially now with economic times as they are, it is hard for a business to justify the time and expense involved.

However, now may be the perfect time to switch to a new accounting system. One that is able to grow as your company grows. One that has a familiar user interface that won’t take employees hours of re-training to learn. An accounting system from one of the largest, well-known and trusted names in the software industry. One like Microsoft Dynamics GP!

Right now, Microsoft has made it easier and more affordable than ever to purchase a new accounting system. With promotional offerings like flexible payment options that let you reduce your upfront investment with affordable annual payments, discounts of up to 50% when migrating to Dynamics GP from a competitive solution, and service rebates that can be applied towards the cost of implementation and services costs, there may not have been a better time to make the switch.

Of course, when you are ready to make the important decision of purchasing a new accounting system you will need to find a knowledgeable and experienced partner to work with. Fortunately, Microsoft makes training options that are easily available and accommodate different peoples’ style of learning.

Trying to perform daily tasks with a solution like Microsoft Dynamics GP without proper training can lead to unnecessary frustration. Although Microsoft Dynamics GP is extremely user-friendly, getting employees properly trained can shorten the amount of time it takes to complete daily activities. Training can give you a better return on your solution investment, help strengthen your employees’ skills, and boost productivity.

And doesn’t everyone appreciate a productive employee?

Microsoft has several easy and convenient training options available for Dynamics GP. First, companies with a current qualifying service plan can access free on-line training available through the Customer Source website. The website has well over 100 e-learning courses available to all employees with a unique user login. Employees are able to take the online courses at a time and place that is convenient for them. They can also track their training progress as they complete each of their specified training courses. And, if they want more reference material, they can always print or download a pdf copy of any of the course training manuals.

Second, Microsoft offers on site classroom training through authorized learning centers or from a Microsoft Certified Partner. For some, it may be easier to learn in a classroom environment, offering employees a chance to ask questions and interact with a certified instructor or a Microsoft Dynamics GP consultant. Classroom training facilities are located throughout the US and can easily be found by searching for your nearest location from within the Customer Source website.

So, whether you have a new employee that needs some training, or a current employee who wants to sharpen their skills, there is a way to get them the training that will best fit their learning style.

Some of it may even be available for FREE!

For more information about Microsoft Dynamics GP training options in or near the state of Utah, please contact <a
