It’s no secret that “doing more with less” is the mantra of almost every business in the US today. In that quest for efficiency, a close examination of the accounting department might be one area that’s been overlooked in the past.

In this excellent article from the Journal of Accountancy titled “Make Your Accounting Department More Efficient”, we learn how to lighten the load in seven ways. Examples include “conduct process walk-throughs”, “establish process metrics” and “reward success”. One in particular caught my eye – it’s called “take advantage of unused system functionality”. The writer states “If you are using any of the mid-to-large-size accounting software packages, chances are you are not using it to its potential…”

Investment in an accounting or ERP system such as Microsoft Dynamics GP can be a big decision. As a business owner, it’s important that you fully utilize the product – and services – you’ve just invested in. If you do, you’ll find that the seven steps to efficiency won’t be daunting at all. In fact, you’ll probably already have them covered!

If your organization is located in Arizona or New Mexico, contact Sherwood Systems for assistance in determining if a technology solution can help your organization better serve your business needs. href="http://www.dynamicssoftwaresolutions.com/dynamics-erp-solutions/">mid-sized companies who are having significant difficulties analyzing their business results. In a slower economy, being able to react quickly is literally “mission-critical”. What are the top 3 reasons why they tell me this is so difficult?

1) They are using Quickbooks, so can’t get financial reporting by business unit, product line, or department.

2) All analysis is done in disconnected Excel spreadsheets, which are consistently out-of-date and require significant manipulation and reconciliation.

3) Managers have to wait for accounting or IT to get any results. They have no capability of easily analyzing their own data, or getting real-time information. There is no reliable way of getting true “business intelligence”.

Fortunately, Microsoft has done an incredible job of tackling all of these issues from the end-user perspective using common tools like Excel, Outlook, and Sharepoint integrated directly with real-time data from the SQL database. Even though the overall economy has been tough this year, our business has been stronger than ever because there is such as a serious need and easily justifiable ROI for these simple, yet very powerful tools.

by Michele Juliana, RSM McGladrey, Microsoft Acquires Midmarket ERP Products, which framed Microsoft’s recent acquisition of Fullscope and LS Retail as an attempt to buy its way into the midmarket, and thus compete with SAP and Oracle. The writer opined that Microsoft Dynamics GP was only used by “small companies and the lower end of the midmarket” – hence the need to buy a company already established.

Excuse me, but…..Dynamics GP is for small companies? At the lower end of the midmarket? Most people define the midmarket as businesses greater than $10 Million in revenue, which is more or less the starting point for Dynamics GP. According to DirectoriesUSA, 97% of businesses are below $10 million in revenue. One can quibble about what constitutes small, but logic will tell you that if you are in the 97th percentile, you are a pretty good sized company! As for the comment that Dynamics GP is for the “lower end of the midmarket,” once again, the numbers tell a different story. There are 374,000 businesses between $10 million and $200 million in revenue, just 40,000 from $200 million to $1 billion. I will concede that a business approaching a billion in revenue may not be a good fit for Dynamics GP, but that’s a very small minority of the midmarket.

My point is this: you may read articles such as the one in Information Week and conclude that either A) Dynamics GP is too small for you, or B) you should be on Oracle or SAP. The reality is, if you have two million dollars lying around and can spend two years implementing an ERP solution, then purchase SAP or Oracle. If you need an affordable, flexible solution that can meet your needs and has a low total cost of ownership, Dynamics GP is the right fit for you.

by Intellitec Solutions, <a
