Over the past 23 years InterDyn Artis has witnessed the software challenges of the lumber industry to maximize profitability, by controlling costs, improving productivity, and enhancing communication between departments, vendors, and customers. Our lumber clients shared with us that the lumber industry needs to have a focused, virtually real time view of every department of their business allowing them to see exactly where their business stands, from procurement, inventory, sawmill, kiln, sales, and distribution – and allowing them to make timely, effective decisions based on accurate, up-to-date information.

InterDyn Artis has the Microsoft Dynamics GP expertise needed to help their lumber clients meet these challenges. One of our Microsoft Dynamics GP clients, Edwards Wood Products (Edwards), founded in 1969 and headquartered in Marshville, North Carolina has grown into a premier lumber business operation with 5 locations throughout South Central North Carolina. Their business operations consist of procurement of forest properties, transportation to/from the mill, complete mill operations, pallet manufacturing, kiln drying/grading, and distribution of high grade hardwood lumber for domestic and overseas markets.

As a smaller business Edwards found RealWorld to be a satisfactory system but as their business grew the RealWorld system just did not cut it. Because of this growth and complexity, Edwards began an evaluation of its business solution and decided it wanted a more powerful, higher-end solution. After a review of multiple industry specific solutions, Edwards decided that a foundation built around industry leading Microsoft Dynamics was the right choice.

Before Microsoft Dynamics GP, month-end closings were difficult to complete and very time consuming. One of the main reasons Edwards looked to a new solution was for financial reporting needs. With RealWorld, financial reports weren’t being completed thoroughly or in a timely manner, causing considerable concern for Edwards’ executive management who needed to make critical decisions based on the company’s finances.

Financial statements for all business operations as completed by location, division, and work center were prerequisites of a new software package. Microsoft Dynamics GP met and exceeded expectations from a reporting standpoint.

With Microsoft Dynamics GP, Edwards has established a core business system foundation that has dramatically increased the efficiency of the operations by automating data flow and reducing manual labor. Other benefits include:

Financial Reports: Management Reporter has significantly lessened the time spent waiting for financial reports. Critical business information is retreived in minutes—these reports were unobtainable with RealWorld and had to be completed as a separate process within Excel. Edwards saved aproximately 2 days each month by automating the preparation of its financial statements.

Intuitiveness: As a user-friendly system, employees quickly adapted to Microsoft Dynamics GP after the implementation with virtually no downtime. In fact, employees were able to generate much better reports in considerably less time.

Daily Processing: Microsoft Dynamics GP has provided a vast improvement in the day-to-day processing of accounts receivable, accounts payable, and collections. What previously had been a multi-step process is now a very simple process, saving both time and effort. Edwards saved an estimated 40 hours per month by automating accounts receivable.

Labor Rededication: Employees who were dedicated to running RealWorld and generating reports in Excel are now focused on profit generating opportunities within Edwards.

Watch a short video of Edwards Wood Products and learn how Microsoft Dynamics GP gave them the edge to remain competitive in today’s lumber market.

Today’s software must be designed and deployed with industry-specific needs and functionality. <a

Recent research shows the mortality rate for small businesses have actually increased by 20% to half failing in the first four years.

There are many reasons why a business fails. I’d rather look at the positive side and share with you how InterDyn Artis, a Microsoft Gold Certified partner, has helped Microsoft Dynamics clients so they don’t become a gruesome statistic. Let’s start by reviewing the first 3 financial rules in Jim Blasingame’s article:

Produce regular (at least quarterly) and accurate financial statements (balance sheet and profit-and-loss).

Hire an accounting firm to help you. Too expensive? How expensive is failure?

Purchase and use one of the financial management software programs. Ask your CPA for a recommendation. Review the remaining financial rules.

InterDyn Artis can help with number 1 and 3 when purchasing a financial management software program that produces regular and accurate financial statements. Microsoft Dynamics GP (formerly Great Plains) enables you to make smart decisions that have a direct impact on your bottom line—increasing margins and improving your cash flow — which, as Jim mentions in his financial rules, is critical to staying out of the business obits.

When working with prospective new clients we recommend you review the Microsoft Dynamics GP Product Capabilities Guide. The guide is an overview of the product modules available within Microsoft Dynamics GP grouped by functional area and color coded to indicate which edition they’re available in. You can judy.vanderlinden@interdynartis.com for more information.

InterDyn Artis can also help determine a budget for your new financial management software with our Microsoft Dynamics GP Cost Quote Estimator Tool. After completing the Microsoft Dynamics GP Quick Quote Request Form you will receive a personalized quote of the cost of a Microsoft Dynamics GP project which includes software licenses, maintenance fees and implementation costs. You will receive your Quick Quote via email; it will include a complete list of included modules and available add-ons.

Understand your accounting needs. Assess the managerial and financial needs that your organization has. What reports do you need? Do you, or should you, process payroll yourself? Do you carry inventory?

Know your business’ industry requirements. Take into consideration the type of business you operate, what sectors you specialize in, and the compliance guidelines you must follow. For example if you distribute goods, what standards or functionality do you need to have to help you meet state, federal, or even internal requirements?

Talk to your CFO, accountant, accounting staff, and IT staff. Speaking with one or several of these positions will help you to quickly get to the heart of what your business is most in need of. Your IT staff will also help you to understand your hardware situation and any needs you might have there before purchasing a new accounting system.

<span

For over 22 years InterDyn Artis clients have turned to Microsoft Dynamics GP as the financial system that gives them the functionality and freedom they need to meet their business management needs. Download Why Now May Be Time to Move from MAS 90/200 to Microsoft Dynamics GP a 16 page whitepaper that tells about users that have made the change and why.

As a Sage MAS 90 user, Winncom Technologies struggled to keep up as their company grew. Sage MAS 90 limited Winncom’s order processing that was primarily manual, provided inadequate access to real-time sales data, and generally failed to scale to meet increasing demands. When Winncom switched to Microsoft Dynamics GP, they were pleased with the results. Winncom estimates it achieved a full return on its investment in only six months by reducing errors in orders by up to 20 percent.

The Winncom story is not unique. National Air Cargo realized a 25 percent increase in processing invoices and sales orders when it switched to Microsoft Dynamics GP. And Fred McKay, Chief Financial Officer of CTS Cement, says, “With Microsoft Dynamics GP, we can continue to grow without expanding our work force”—which is especially impressive considering the company’s 20 percent average annual revenue growth.

Clients that utilize Microsoft Dynamics GP enjoy some of the following benefits:

1.Access to real-time data thus allowing you to process orders and invoices faster, reduce errors, and make smarter, more effective business decisions.

2.Critical functionality such as electronic banking, cash flow management, intercompany processing, manufacturing, project accounting, field service, forecasting, and distribution.

Additional features of Microsoft Dynamics GP include:

Business intelligence – Microsoft Dynamics GP offers sophisticated tools for collecting and analyzing data across the organization in real time, enabling smarter, more effective business decisions.

Comprehensive functionality - Microsoft Dynamics GP provides the comprehensive and detailed functionality businesses need, including critical functions such as electronic banking, cash flow management, intercompany processing, manufacturing, project accounting, field service, forecasting, distribution, and <a

I explained to a prospect the other day that now is the time many organizations migrate to a new ERP system – during Microsoft promotions. For 22 years InterDyn Artis has helped organizations lower their cost of purchasing Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains) accounting software through Microsoft promotions. Below you will learn about three (3) Microsoft Dynamics GP promotions that can help your business move to a comprehensive business management solution at an affordable price. Now is the time to act! Before you check out the Microsoft Dynamics promotions you may want to watch a Microsoft Dynamics GP video demonstrating the following scenario: An executive observes and responds to critical trends in the company’s business. You’ll see how the executive leverages Microsoft Dynamics GP to track key metrics, assign tasks to staff members, and prepare for an important customer meeting.

Current Microsoft Dynamics GP Promotions, Offers, Incentives

1. Save up to $7,980 with Microsoft’s “Buy 1 User Get 3” Offer – This promotion targets US growing medium sized businesses that want to take advantage of the rich functionality, low cost of ownership, and rapid deployment offered by Microsoft Dynamics GP. Effective March 1, 2011 and available until end of business day June 24, 2011, all new customers that meet the eligibility criteria can take advantage of this special offer.

With the initial purchase of a Foundation Pack for Microsoft Dynamics GP the customer gets one user as standard and, under the terms of this offer, will get up to two (2) additional users for no additional license cost.

Offer is valid for both Business Essentials and Advanced Management Editions of the product.

Customers can order any configuration of functionality and any number of additional users they need to meet their business need and benefit from the offer on the first two (2) additional users. Additional users and functionality modules will be sold per regular Microsoft Dynamics price list.

2. Bigger BAM Sales Offer – Every new customer that purchases twelve (12) or more Advanced Management (AM) user licenses under this promotion will receive a maximum of four (4) additional AM user licenses at no additional charge. Offer valid March 1, 2011 thru June 24, 2011.

3. Buy 1 Get 50% Off Sales Offer – New US customers of US partners who purchase 1 Business Ready Licensing user license for Microsoft Dynamics GP and who also purchase a Business Ready Advantage Plan for the licensed solution with a minimum three (3) year commitment will receive 50% off of the license purchase price. Offer valid March 1, 2011 thru June 24, 2011.

These Microsoft Dynamics promotions are too good to pass up. At least check out our new Microsoft Dynamics Quick Quote tool that will estimate the cost of Microsoft Dynamics GP when you complete a Cost Quote Estimate form. After completing the form you will receive a personalized quote of the cost of a Microsoft Dynamics GP project which includes software licenses, maintenance fees, and implementation cost. You will receive a Quick Quote via email; it will include a complete list of included modules and available add-ons. The Microsoft Dynamics GP Quick Quote represents an estimate of what your organization should budget for a total ERP/accounting software project. It is not a binding contract and does not include the above Microsoft offers. InterDyn Artis welcomes the opportunity to answer your questions and provide an estimated proposal based on the above Microsoft promotions.

business application implementation consultant is to provide the technical answers – the “how to” that you need to accomplish the task that you have in mind. And that is true, but…that is not always the right thing to do for the customer.

At InterDyn – Artis, we believe that sometimes the greatest value that a consultant can bring is a fresh perspective. As your business environment changes, the amount of data you need to enter into your ERP software system increases, and your customers’ requirements change, it can be very easy to think in terms of continuing the same processes…just in a more complicated form.

Over the years, our consultants have had many requests such as these:

I need these reports that MS Dynamics GP does not offer….

I need the invoice to print on a triplicate form on a dot matrix printer.

I need to make a one-sided entry to adjust the balance in one account.

I need to create a completely new company database and keep the master data in synch with my existing company.

I need this report…often a real need. When the request is for several variations of the same report, however, it is time to take a step back and ask “Why do you need these reports?” and “Who will be using them?” Digging into the problem that really needs to be solved can save the client a lot of time and money. At a minimum, doing so allows you to choose the best reporting option. Sometimes the better answer is to use Analysis Cubes or Excel Report Builder rather than to build several variations of the same report.

I need the invoice to print on a triplicate form on a dot matrix printer. OK, so this example is a little dated. It is relevant, however. It is the consultant’s responsibility to propose alternatives when there is readily available technology that will save the client time and money. For example, this request was so that two copies of an order and one copy of the picking ticket would print on separate colors and be easily identifiable in the warehouse. Our consultant set up Named Printers in MS Dynamics GP to print 2 copies of the order from one tray of a laser printer and one copy of the picking ticket from another tray – each loaded with the correct color of paper. Much less expensive and more reliable than multi-part forms…but achieving the desired result.

I need to make a one-sided entry to adjust the balance in one account. Any time you need to work around the controls in your ERP system, you need to stop and ask “Why?” This kind of request is almost always the tip of the iceberg and as such represents an opportunity to address data or procedural problems that the client may be facing. Never allow your client to take on that type of liability without first understanding the underlying problem and determining what alternatives exist.

I need to create a completely new company database and keep the master data in synch with my existing company. Perhaps…or perhaps a third party product or customization would allow you to keep one company database while applying the controls you need. Understand the reason for a separate company before undertaking the programming or reporting that would be needed to keep everything in synch between the two. Make sure that your client understands his options.

This blog was written by Lisa Suggs. With her 14 years of experience as a Microsoft Certified Consultant at InterDyn Artis, Lisa knows the capabilities of MS Forecaster among others. She also has had the advantage of seeing how numerous companies operate so she has a good idea of what works well and what doesn’t. There may be better alternatives that you haven’t considered. In the end, it is your decision…but your consultant needs to ensure that you are making one that is well-informed.

InterDyn Artis, established in 1989, is a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner dedicated to the implementation, training and support of the Microsoft Dynamics line of products including Microsoft Dynamics GP (Great Plains), Microsoft Dynamics CRM, SharePoint, and Business Intelligence.

by InterDyn Artis, <a

As these systems become more important, there are often conflicting opinions about how they should be maintained and updated. This is no longer a technical decision that should be made by the IT department. ERP upgrades are now important enough that senior management needs to fully understand both the timing and project plan.

A project plan for an ERP upgrade should look like a condensed version of an ERP implementation plan, since the essential steps are the same. In most cases, though, the duration and resources required will be reduced. Regardless of how narrow the scope is for an upgrade project, it always needs a formal project plan and a project team. The project should have a strict structure in place and management oversight with specific milestone dates, metrics, and change management. Companies that take a casual approach to upgrades or simply dump the project in the lap of the IT department will increase the risk of business disruption and jeopardize the expected benefits.

It is also vital that your company develops a strategy for how often the software and underlying technology will be updated so that the entire organization can plan and budget for the inevitable costs and disruptions. Because upgrades are periodic events, it is important to create a repeatable process as well as a set of tools and skills to ensure the projects can be executed efficiently while minimizing any risk to the organization.

The bottom line is that the key to minimizing the pain of ERP upgrades is to have both a long-term ERP lifecycle strategy and a comprehensive tactical plan for the actual upgrade project. href="http://www.interdynartis.com/products/Pages/default.aspx" target="_blank">Microsoft Dynamics® can help you grow your business:

Sustainable growth within the distribution industry has to come from a strategic approach, using available technology to thrive worldwide. Here are 4 building blocks to focus on:

Improve customer service
There are many ways distributors can cost-effectively deepen their local customer relationships. For example, you can create an online catalog tool that it adapts for each customer based on purchase history and that provides real-time inventory and order status. This self-service product information and ordering tool enables salespeople to spend their time resolving higher level customer matters, routing lower level issues directly to inside sales support, and prospecting new opportunities.

Manage business complexity
The right technology can integrate distributor operations across multiple locations and free up your employees to address emerging business demands. Information-sharing tools, even commonly implemented technologies such as e-mail, can significantly increase visibility and communication across the company, helping distributors stay ahead of competitors by being faster and more responsive to changing market conditions.

Attract high-value employees
As technologies help tighten the supply chain, talent will increasingly be the critical differentiator for distributors. You can bet your competitors are actively recruiting and training the next generation of employees.

Improve process, productivity and profitability
Many distribution functions involve repetitive, low value-adding activities, such as transaction processing, fulfillment, and warehouse and logistics management. Distributors that find ways to free employees from those tasks to focus on high value-adding activities, such as solving customer problems, deepening vendor/customer relationships, and learning new product solutions, see significant increase in profitability. Great distributors work constantly on process improvement in every part of the business. They have key performance indicators (KPIs) in place that they use internally and share with customers to help benchmark their value and differentiate them from competitors.

How does your company measure up in each of these four areas?
