As the SaaS world expands, organizations are looking beyond CRM (Customer Relationship Management) and contact management systems to full blown, best of breed, Enterprise Software like Dynamics GP.

One question that potential customers ask me is “what happens if I lose my internet connection? How do we ship, bill and manufacture?”. Normally this questions comes with a smirk, like “there’s no good answer for this one!”, but I quietly pull a mobile internet stick out of my briefcase and simply ask the customer “how many workstations would you consider critical?”. When the answer is really: just a few, then for a small monthly fee, you can purchase a few of these and keep them on standby. The bandwidth requirement for Hosted (SaaS) Dynamics GP, for example, is quite small.

The odds of companies losing internet connectivity is, in fact, quite small, but this question comes up all the time.

So if you’re considering Software as a Service (SaaS) or online accounting or business management software and are concerned about your connection to “the cloud”, don’t be. It’s a problem that’s easily solved.

I agree with you. If the connection to internet is lost than beside problems with SaaS apps access there are other problems like communication with customers via email, access to bank account via web browser, etc. The solution you mention – backup connection – is sufficient and for SMB is enough. We at OffiServ are hosting our solution on Google AppEngine which additionally has pretty good availability rate: at least 99%.
